Flourishing Neighborhoods
Today’s most persistent problems—concentrated poverty, social disconnection, institutional mistrust, and fiscal strain—are deeply intertwined. Individuals are disconnected from opportunity and are isolated. Children and young people have fewer places to build a sense of belonging. Families navigate fragmented services. Cities face mounting financial pressures. Nonprofits struggle to sustain impact.
Despite expertise and investment, results often fall short because efforts fail to align with the lived realities of neighborhoods.
Flourishing Neighborhoods is a collaborative platform dedicated to strengthening communities by focusing on neighborhoods—the place where social challenges concentrate and where lasting solutions must take root.
Our Focus
We start with the belief that neighborhoods function as ecosystems. They shape opportunity, relationships, trust, social mobility, and resilience. When social networks weaken and institutions lose their local footing, social and economic stability erode. But when institutions are locally rooted and systems align to bolster community assets, neighborhoods flourish.
What determines whether neighborhoods become fragile or flourish? We focus on five interconnected priorities:
Expanding access to opportunity
Strengthening everyday connections and shared spaces
Protecting long-term financial sustainability
Restoring local stewardship
Building on the assets that allow communities to thrive
These are not programs—they are strategies. When they shape our efforts, neighborhoods gain resilience. When they are set aside, fragility increases.
Our work explores how to implement these five strategies.
What to Expect
Together, we will explore what is working, what is failing, and why through our case studies, toolkits, rankings, interviews, and reader contributions.
We examine sideways moves—locally grounded efforts that build on existing assets, strengthen local institutions, and unlock capacity without expanding bureaucracy. We also elevate innovation at the neighborhood scale: new alignments, stewardship models, and practical experiments that redesign how opportunity, connection, and resources are expanded. Across places, we surface patterns so lessons can travel.
We will publish at least one substantial essay per week and proactively seek out submissions from a wide variety of sources.
Join the Conversation
Flourishing Neighborhoods is intentionally collaborative. We welcome thoughtful submissions and perspectives from practitioners, leaders, funders, researchers, and residents. All contributions are reviewed carefully and published selectively to maintain clarity, rigor, and relevance.
Consider this a shared learning space. Over time, we aim to build a living repository of neighborhood-centered innovation that others can adapt and apply.
If you believe stronger neighborhoods are essential to social progress—and that innovation must happen where people actually live—we invite you to join us:
